Moira Thompson, the Executive Principal of Hawthorns which is an outstanding special school in our Trust, is conducting a review of SEND provision in each of our academies. Although the review isn’t complete, talking to her about what she is learning the most striking thing she says is that when provision for SEND is at it’s very best it isn’t something separate, something added on for a particular group of children; it is absolutely at the heart of everything the school says and does when designing great learning opportunities for children of all abilities. And because this review is an enquiry into practice we need to be asking ourselves; how do they do that and what are the things we need to do to ensure it happens in all of our schools?
